A team of five IFP School students took 2nd place in the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) Laurie Dake Challenge on June 1st at the 86th EAGE Conference and Exhibition in Toulouse.

The Laurie Dake Challenge is an international applied geosciences competition.

The challenge takes place in three stages. It begins with a mission to be prepared by each of the 18 selected teams. At the end of this first round, 10 teams are chosen to submit a work plan, and the jury selects the 6 best proposals.

For this year’s competition, participants had to devise a strategy for the mineral storage of CO2 in basaltic formations, based on data provided by TotalEnergies.

In the final round, each team was given a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 15-minute question and answer session before a panel of industry professionals.

The IFP School team was made up of students from the Subsurface Technologies for Sustainable Energies (STSE) program: Jonathan Chin, Berat Gunel, Mahmoud Mohamed, Ahmed Mokhtar and Shanana Mammadova. It was coached by Jérôme Laval, a lecturer at the Georesources and Energy Center.

The School finished second behind King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and ahead of the University of Miskolc.

The School would like to thank Stéphane Renard, an engineer in IFPEN’s Earth Sciences and Environmental Technologies business unit, for his support in the reactive transport and geochemical aspects of rock-fluid interaction.

Congratulations to our students on this new award!
