Accompanied by Karine Labat, Supervisor of the Advanced Master program (Mastère Spécialiséâ) « Geo Data Management for Energy Mix« , two IFP School students from the class of 2024 took part in the 8th edition of the 24h of Innovation at the Center of the Earth Challenge, a competition organized by the Avenia cluster on November 9 and 10 at the ESC Business School in Pau.

Jorge Nino Rodriguez (28, Colombian) and Hanna Wannous (22, Lebanese), students in the Petroleum Geosciences / Reservoir Geoscience and Engineering (PGS/RGE) programs, each joined mixed teams to work for 24 hours on one of the many topics proposed by subsurface industries. They both chose CO2 storage:

  • CO2: Catch me if you can (topic proposed and coached by CapGemini);
  • Devising new geophysical methods for tracking the migration of sequestered CO2 in depleted onshore reservoirs (topic suggested and coached by Terega).

This was a rewarding experience for both students:

“I consider this challenge a great experience. The fact that we had to provide an innovative, new, and feasible solution to the proposed problem within 24 hours without any sleep was stressful, yet it taught me how to deal with my stress and fatigue” says Hanna.

For his part, Jorge shares:

« To participate in this challenge was a very interesting and new experience for me. Working in a multidisciplinary team to find a solution for a specific problem in just 24h was not a simple task, however it was very rewarding since it is a practical way to know and to control ourselves while working under pressure. Finally, visiting Pau was a good opportunity to network and to get to know some other stunning landscapes of France!”.
